The Pontalba Buildings, forming the upriver and downriver sides of Jackson Square along St. Peter and St. Ann Streets, . Originally called the Casa Curial (Ecclesiastical House), are matching red-brick block long 3-and-one-half-story buildings erected from 1849-1851 by the Baroness Micaela Almonester Pontalba. An early champion of the mixed-use concept, the Pontalba Buildings offer street-level shops and restaurants with apartments on the upper two floors. The unique blend of Creole, Parisian, and Greek Revival styles is based on designs by James Gallier, with whom the Baroness failed to enter a contract, and the drawings of Henry Howard, to whom she would pay only a 0 drafting fee. At the ground level is a continous colonnade of square stone piers, whose openings are filled with glazed doors painting green. The flamboyant 12-story Dorilton Apartments, designed by Elisha Harris Janes and Richard Leopold Leo, was developed by Hamilton M. Weed in 1902, who speculatively bought the lot 3 years earlier before the uptwon subway routes were set, at a cost of 0,000. Echoing a design they implemented for Weed’s Alimar, Janes & Leo employed a stone base, red brick middle section and curving mansard on a larger scale.

As architect critic, Montgomery Schuyler, noted at the time, ""It was a most questionable and question-provoking edifice in the guise of an apartment house. It not merely solicits but demands attention. It yells ‘Come and look at me’ so loud that the preoccupied or even the color blind can not choose but hear." The building took French ideas, but used them in a more ornate manner than any French architect would have, incorporating more cartouches than any building in Paris.

The Dorilton Boasting one of the most attractive entrance gates in the city–a sidestreet portal that leads into a couryard lightwell bridges at the ninth story by an arch. The entranceway is surmounted by two putti, flanked by ornate cast-iron fences and joined by glope-topped columns.

The building originally had 48 apartments, fourt to a floor, ranging from 1-to-4 bedrooms and renting for 0 to 0 a month. Today it has 59. By the time the Dorilton had been built, the idea of the apartment plan had finally been perfected, separating the public rooms like the parlor, library, and dining room from the private bedrooms and service spaces.

Over time, stores were installed in the Broadway frontage and, starting in the 1950′s, large sections of cornice, whole dormers, lengths of cresting and other elements crumbled or were removed. The building was converted into a co-op in 1984. In 1990, at the cost of .5 million, the mansard was reslated and some dormers and cresting rebuilt. A deep cornice at the 10th-floor level, originally stone, could not be rebuilt but a lesser cornice at the 11th-floor level was painted in trompe l’oeil to imitate the banding and shadows of the original.

The Dorilton Apartments were designated a landmark by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission in 1974.

This is going to be the longest 45 days ever. Lucas and I found a really great apartment on the south end of town. Our lease starts March 2nd. Thank the gods! No more crazy Kat & dickhead Kevin! I am SO over them!

For this ramshackle nonsense. When I was apartment hunting last month, I looked at a few places in Capitol Hill. They were all garbage. This is a basement apartment on E. Thomas–spacious, yes. Charmingly wood-paneled, yes. But look up, and look in the way back: Yes, those are hot water pipes for the whole building, burning and clanking dangerously close to head room. And in the back room, a sad, crummy little bathroom–with a wall of electricity meters for each unit in the building!! The Dorilton Boasting one of the most attractive entrance gates in the city–a sidestreet portal that leads into a couryard lightwell bridges at the ninth story by an arch. The entranceway is surmounted by two putti, flanked by ornate cast-iron fences and joined by glope-topped columns.

The building originally had 48 apartments, fourt to a floor, ranging from 1-to-4 bedrooms and renting for 0 to 0 a month. Today it has 59. By the time the Dorilton had been built, the idea of the apartment plan had finally been perfected, separating the public rooms like the parlor, library, and dining room from the private bedrooms and service spaces.

A deep cornice at the 10th-floor level, originally stone, could not be rebuilt but a lesser cornice at the 11th-floor level was painted in trompe l’oeil to imitate the banding and shadows of the original.

The Dorilton Apartments were designated a landmark by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission in 1974.

So the Kat & Kevin (the housemates) have LiveJournal’s and Twitters. Some of the things I see lately REALLY made me want to head-desk. Here are a few things I have noticed over the last several days. Their "tweets" in bold. My responses in plain text:

“The roomates that are moving out packed up all their kitchen stuff…. I wonder how they are planning on eating”

Um… You DO realize that we have been eating out for EVERY meal for like 3 weeks now, right? C’mon, you see what I am getting every time something is delivered! Also, the WHOLE kitchen is not packed. Just our stuff. Did you forget that we are giving you all of the old stuff we don’t want? There are tons of plates, bowls & such still in the kitchen. It’s not like we are going to eat off of napkins…

“Yeah, We have discovered that we need to purchase a 360… the roomies have packed theirs already. It sucks majorly.”

You DISCOVERED??? Seriously? SERIOUSLY! There is no discovery. It’s not like we have been hiding the fact that we hate living with you. Its not like we secretly packed up the house the night of the move. You knew it was going to be packed. What did you think- we would give it to you when we moved? Hardly. Just in case you were not aware- We are going to need that iPod and television back too. Hate to ruin that “discovery”

You are buying a house and have cancelled our cable to “economize”, yet you run out and buy a 0 game system that you don’t even own games for. Then, you justify your ridiculous purchase by “brown-bagging it until May”. What’s the point? Oh wait… That’s right… You have been using Lucas’ Xbox 360 to stream Netflix movies, without his permission. That’s one hell of an investment for streamed, substandard quality movies… We packed up what is OURS and you bitch about having to buy one for yourself. Get over it! We are moving. If you think I am going to wait until the last minute to pack & worry about how you guys are being affected, you are nuts. Also, if you have to “brown-bag it” to afford something, maybe you should do that *before* the purchase, not after…

In regards to that 2-3 month lease you are seeking- Stop being pissed at us over it. You chose to wait until JANUARY to *think* about buying a house. You should have been on the ball in November. Everyone I know has said it took 3-4 months from start to finish for home shopping. I told you guys in SEPTEMBER that you needed to start soon. Did you listen? NO. Therefore, suck it up and stop being a couple of asshats in life…

Ever heard of this thing called a pot? You can put things in it and place it over a heat source. Turn on the heat source and the contents become hot, such as water. And seriously… SERIOUSLY… Did you think we weren’t going to pack it? I’m not leaving anything of importance behind! Yes, I am going to give you all the old stuff I don’t want, but don’t expect us to leave it all…

God I can’t wait to move. I feel so hateful towards you two lately. You do nothing but piss me off and I can’t stand either one of you. Kat, you should be glad I don’t tell you how I really feel about you, especially in front of Kevin. Kevin, you are not GOD, so stop acting like it. You are a dick. Stop acting like that.
