Some Things I Don’t Buy about the Free Will and Determinism Debate
The free will and determinism debate is discussed and how the fallacy of composition and emergent properties might be relevant to the debate.

@DanaGarrett well, my humble advice would be this. Pull your finger out and nail them. Or respnd to them! Most of the philospohical types here on youtube are egoists
. lol…
@cammyjee That would be an interesting use of Pascal’s wager. It’s been employed in other disciplines as well. For example, Noam Chomsky uses it as an argument for political activity.
@WiseMonkey888 Glad you liked it. Doubt I’ll get any video responses though. Just a hunch.
Let’s say every choice we make is ultimately deterministic and the experience of free will is proven to be an illusion – ok, but you can’t argue against the blinding fact that we are still left with the burden of having to make decisions for ourselves. Anyone who is willing to believe that the process of making a choice does not exist is iether in deniel or hasn’t grown out of infantsy yet.
Great vid Dana.
You make many excellent points, clearly and concisely.
I think free will is an emergent property of consciousness, which is an emergent property of the complexity of brain neurology.
Excellent video! Great summary of different view points of the current understanding, on a rather ambiguous subject. Very helpful in providing clarity. Thank you!
correct about what?…. “freedom” to think and act without material cause? no dough this only works for humans …right?
I know that I cannot know. I will use all the things I know to support that assumption.
How do I know I can’t know if I don’t? I don’t know.
QM gives Free Will possibility, but not plausibility in itself.
Good video mate.
Excellent.
Nice. Finally I know what to say to this debate: I don’t know! How could I? I was leaning towards determinism, because every decision I make is clearly influenced by my upbringing, my environment, current state of my brain etc. But how could I be sure that under the exact same conditions I would make the exact same decision? But I wouldn’tcall different outcomes ‘free will’, either. Great video, though!
I second Prof Anton’s sentiment about this video: great vid!
great vid!
I think neurophysiology, makes it pretty plausible – there is no free will.
Your decision making is working in the frontal part of the brain, governed by cause & effect. Also part of the brain was stimulated, and made people move and they actually felt they choose to move that way freely. People hurt from brain damage point to the same direction. I suggest as a start an easy read: “Into the Silent Land: Travels in Neuropsychology”
This reminds of discussions I’ve had with others about topics involving integral theory and enactivism. It was refreshing to hear someone on YouTube with such an intellectually humble opinion. Similar to believing in freewill is the belief of the strong atheist that God doesn’t exist. I prefer the weak atheist position of simply lacking belief either way. My belief or lack of belief can’t alter whether or not God and freewill exist, but I understand that conviction can be comforting.
faved
great video bro
Just want to thank you for this video. Coz I always have big respect for people that say that they don’t know but still trying to understand. what I believe in this mater is that we have free will to chose in a given realm. (so we both have free will and we don’t have free will at the same time) Regard and have a skilful life. Pinge
I’ll never choose a side but I’ll lean one way. It’s funny, if you put pascal’s wager into the debate, the wager seems to make sense. Belief in freewill for your own sake (even if it may not exist) seems like the “might-aswell” thing to do. Maybe belief in freewill is the very essence of freewill.
Oh… thats a bloody good video! Bloody good video! You just nailed the lot of them…hurrah! You deserve mose subs!

The hell i do!
